Hip Replacement in Detail

What is a Hip Replacement

The primary reason for hip replacement surgery is to relieve pain that can’t be controlled by other treatments. Conditions leading to this include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, and hip injuries. Severe pain from these conditions can interfere with daily activities, such as walking, sitting, or even resting.

Prosthesis Materials: The artificial hip components can be made from various materials, including metal, plastic, and ceramic. These materials are chosen based on their durability, compatibility with the body, and the patient’s activity level.

Types of Hip Replacements: There are different types of hip replacement surgeries:

    • Total Hip Replacement: The most common form, replacing the entire hip joint.
    • Partial Hip Replacement: Involves replacing just the femoral head, often used post-hip fracture.
    • Hip Resurfacing: Aimed at relieving pain from cartilage loss, this involves resurfacing the natural joint.
    • Bilateral Hip Replacement: Replaces both hips simultaneously, potentially reducing overall recovery time but requiring intensive post-surgery physiotherapy.

Types of Hip Replacements: There are different types of hip replacement surgeries:

    • Total Hip Replacement: The most common type, where both the acetabulum (hip socket) and the femoral head (thigh bone’s upper end) are replaced.
    • Partial Hip Replacement: Involves replacing only the femoral head.
    • Hip Resurfacing: A less invasive procedure where the surgeon trims and caps the femoral head with a smooth metal covering.

Living with a hip affected by arthritis or injury can severely limit your freedom of movement and cause persistent pain or stiffness. Hip replacement surgery can be a life-changing solution. Here are some of the benefits you might experience:

  • Substantial pain relief
  • Increased mobility
  • Durable and long-lasting results
  • An overall enhanced quality of life

While hip replacement surgery is generally safe, like any surgical procedure, it does carry certain risks. These can include infection, hip dislocation, fracture, alterations in leg length, inflammation, fluid buildup, and blood clots. Although these complications are rare, we take comprehensive measures to minimize these risks.

Your hip replacement will typically begin with either general or spinal anaesthesia. The procedure includes making an incision, preparing the hipbone, fitting the artificial joint, and then closing the incision. The entire process usually takes about 2 hours, followed by at least one night’s stay in the hospital for recovery.

The specific details of your hip replacement will depend on the type of surgery you undergo. The various types include:

  • Total Hip Replacement: The most common form, replacing the entire hip joint.
  • Partial Hip Replacement: Involves replacing just the femoral head, often used post-hip fracture.
  • Hip Resurfacing: Aimed at relieving pain from cartilage loss, this involves resurfacing the natural joint.
  • Bilateral Hip Replacement: Replaces both hips simultaneously, potentially reducing overall recovery time but requiring intensive post-surgery physiotherapy.

Recovery from hip replacement is a major process, and our dedicated team will be there to support you every step of the way. The total recovery time varies but can take up to 12 months. Post-surgery, you’ll need assistance at home for at least a week and should avoid strenuous activities for 6 to 12 weeks. Physiotherapy exercises will be crucial in regaining mobility and comfort with your new hip.

Are there any risks and side effects of a Hip Replacement?

While hip replacement surgery is generally safe, like any surgical procedure, it does carry certain risks. These can include infection, hip dislocation, fracture, alterations in leg length, inflammation, fluid buildup, and blood clots. Although these complications are rare, we take comprehensive measures to minimize these risks.

What does a Hip Replacement procedure involved?

Anesthesia: Before the procedure begins, anesthesia is administered to ensure comfort and painlessness during the surgery. This can be either general anesthesia, which puts you to sleep, or spinal anesthesia, which numbs your lower body.

Incision: The surgeon makes an incision over the front or side of your hip, through the layers of tissue. The size and location of the incision depend on various factors, including the surgeon’s approach and your anatomy.

Preparing the Hipbone: After exposing the hip joint, the surgeon removes the damaged femoral head (the top part of your thigh bone). The next step involves preparing the acetabulum (hip socket). The surgeon removes any damaged cartilage and shapes the socket to precisely fit the new metal shell part of the artificial joint.

Inserting the Prosthesis: The artificial joint components are then inserted. The acetabular component (hip socket part) is often pressed into the bone for a tight fit. Sometimes, surgical cement is used to secure it. The femoral stem (thigh component) is then inserted into your thigh bone. Depending on the prosthesis and the condition of your bone, the stem can be either cemented or “press-fit” into the bone.

Hip Implant Surgery

Closing the Incision: Once the new joint is in place, the surgeon reattaches the muscles and closes the incision with sutures or staples. Sometimes a drainage tube is placed to drain fluid that might accumulate in the hip area post-surgery.

Hip Replacement FAQ's

Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a damaged or worn hip joint is replaced with an artificial implant. This treatment is primarily recommended for individuals suffering from chronic hip pain and mobility issues, often due to arthritis or severe hip injuries. The goal of the surgery is not only to alleviate pain but also to improve the function of the hip, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life.

Recovery time post-hip replacement varies based on individual factors like age, health condition, and the specific type of surgery performed. In general, patients may begin walking with assistance within a day after the surgery, and most are able to return to regular daily activities within 3 to 6 weeks. However, complete recovery, including the ability to engage in more strenuous activities, may take up to 6 months. It’s important to follow a personalized rehabilitation plan, including physiotherapy, to ensure effective and speedy recovery.

While hip replacement is a commonly performed and generally safe procedure, it carries certain risks, as does any major surgery. These risks include potential infection at the site of the surgery, the formation of blood clots, the possibility of hip dislocation, and slight variations in leg length post-surgery. Though these complications are relatively rare, it is important for patients to be aware of them. Surgeons take various precautions to minimize these risks, and discussing them during pre-surgical consultations is an essential part of the preparation process.

The longevity of artificial hip joints can vary, but most are designed to last between 15 and 20 years. The lifespan of a hip implant depends on several factors, including the patient’s activity level, weight, and the specific type of implant used. Advances in medical technology and surgical techniques are continuously improving the durability and functionality of these implants.

Many patients can return to sporting activities after hip replacement surgery, although it is generally advised to focus on low-impact activities to preserve the implant’s integrity and longevity. Suitable activities often include swimming, cycling, and golf. High-impact activities like jogging, basketball, or football may increase the wear and tear on the new joint and are generally not recommended. The timeline for returning to sports and the type of sports suitable for you will be discussed as part of your rehabilitation plan.
