Penile Lesions in Detail

This procedure is performed to remove penile lesions from the penis and foreskin. A small, localised incision can be made to remove the lesion, or alternatively a laser can be used to treat it. The type of procedure that will be carried out will depend on various factors, such as the type of lesion you have, the underlying cause behind it and your surgeon’s recommendation.

This type of procedure can provide a number of benefits, depending on the symptoms and cause of the penile lesion. As a guide, these can include:

  • Relief from pain, discomfort and itching
  • Prevention of complications arising from untreated infections or other underlying causes
  • Improved sexual health
  • Improved confidence

Every kind of surgical procedure carries some element of risk. Risks associated with a penile lesion excision procedure include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Discomfort
  • Swelling
  • Changes in sensation
  • Cosmetic changes
  • Skin irritation or rash

Once a diagnosis and cause has been made in relation to your penile lesion, a personalised treatment plan will be put in place for you. The specific treatment technique that’s used and the guidance given will depend on your own situation and the recommendation of your urologist.

However, treatment options which may be used include an excision, where the lesion is completely removed – your surgeon will make an incision to remove the lesion along with a margin of healthy tissue, to help ensure that it is completely removed.

Alternatively, laser surgery can be used for some types of superficial lesions. In this case, a focused laser beam removes or destroys it. This approach is generally less invasive and keeps scarring to a minimum.

The best way to understand what the right course of action is for you is to speak to a qualified medical professional. The approach they take can vary, as it depends on a range of factors such as the size and location of the lesion and its underlying cause. They will be able to give you advice and recommendations based on your individual circumstances and overall health.

After your procedure, you can expect to have some discomfort, swelling and bruising near the incision and this can last up to 2 weeks. You can help encourage healing by applying ice packs to your penis and wearing a support garment for this time period.

The time taken for healing after penile lesion surgery will vary depending on the underlying cause of the lesion and the treatment that you’re having. Some lesions may heal within a few days, but others may take weeks. It’s likely that your penis may be swollen for 7 to 10 days.

To help with your recovery, you should avoid any strenuous activity for 2 – 3 weeks, and avoid sexual activity and lifting any heavy objects for up to 6 weeks.

Liposuction Vs Vaser Liposuction

Even when we lead a healthy lifestyle, eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly, we can still have areas of our body that we’re unhappy with, such as pockets of fat that obstinately refuse to disappear, no matter what we do.

Penile Lesions FAQ's

They can recur, and this is more common with some kinds of infection and skin conditions.

You can help to minimise the likelihood of lesions by practicing safe sex and using a condom, being regularly tested for sexually transmitted infections, maintaining good hygiene, avoiding irritants and seeking medical advice if you notice any unusual changes on your penis.

During this procedure, inflatable or semi-rigid rods are surgically inserted inside the penis.

Inflatable implants are the most commonly-used type – a pump is inserted into the scrotum and a reservoir in the abdomen. By squeezing the pump, fluid transfers to the reservoir and into the rods to make the penis become erect and restore its function. The pump is squeezed again to make the penis flaccid again.

In the case of semi-rigid rods, as the implant is always rigid to some extent, the penis is never fully flaccid at any time. It is bent away from the body to create an erection, and away from the body when not in use.
