Nose surgery for men

Rhinoplasty – also known as a ‘nose job’ or nose reshaping – is one of the most common male cosmetic surgery procedures. It can make your nose more in proportion to your other facial features and can make it more symmetrical. And if you have had an injury to your nose which has made breathing difficult, this type of procedure can help.

Rhinoplasty in Detail

This type of surgery is carried out to change the size or shape of your nose. If you feel that your nose is too big for your face or if it’s hooked or crooked, you might choose to have rhinoplasty to help to improve your appearance. It can also correct medical issues which interfere with your breathing.

Surgical rhinoplasty can be ‘open’ or ‘closed’. Open rhinoplasty is generally used when a patient needs more extensive changes to their nose, as it gives the surgeon better access to the nose structure. Closed rhinoplasty is less invasive than open – the incisions are made inside the nose, so there’s less swelling and scarring.

As with all kinds of surgery, there are risks involved in having nose surgery. As well as the risks that having anaesthetic can bring, these include:

  • Infection
  • Bruising and swelling
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Cartilage damage
  • Blood clots

Your surgeon will discuss the risks as well as the benefits of this kind of procedure at your consultation.

This will depend on what you’d like to achieve from your surgery and the type of rhinoplasty technique that your surgeon is using.

For both open and closed rhinoplasty, you’ll be under general anaesthetic and so you will be asleep while the operation is performed.

During open rhinoplasty, an incision will be made in the skin separating your nostrils. This allows the surgeon to gain access to the cartilage and bone to carry out the procedure.

If you’re having closed rhinoplasty, any incision will be made inside your nose, separating the skin from the bone and cartilage so that the surgeon can reshape it.

You should be over 18, a non-smoker, in good general physical and mental health and be realistic about what can be achieved when considering any kind of surgery. If you have a nose defect or have had a previous injury or suffered trauma to your nose, if you feel that your nose or its tip is too big or wide, if you’d like to change the size of your nostrils or if you have breathing issues, rhinoplasty could be a good option.

You’ll need to take at least 2 weeks off work after your nose surgery, although exactly how much time you’ll need will depend on what you do for a living.

It’s essential to rest up for the first few days, making sure that you try not to move your head too much. Sleeping or resting with your head higher than your chest is important, too.

Internal dressings will have been applied to your nose, as well as a splint being placed across it, following your operation. These will be removed after about a week. A dissolvable internal dressing will be applied, too, as it’s possible that your nose might bleed or drain in the days afterwards

Latest News & Advice

Should I Have Open Or Closed Rhinoplasty?

Nose surgery is a very popular cosmetic procedure – In fact, in 2020 it was the 4th most popular procedure in the world. If you’re unhappy with the shape, size or even function of your nose, having rhinoplasty could help.

Rhinoplasty (Nose Job) FAQ's

This will depend on a range of factors, such as the rate at which you normally heal, the type of skin you have, and the type of rhinoplasty procedure that you’ve had. Typically, though, you can expect that your final results from your nose surgery will take anything from 6 – 12 months.

It’s possible for nose surgery to be carried out on adults of almost any age, provided that they are a mature adult aged at least 18 and are in good health. Up until the age of about 40, the skin will generally maintain a good degree of elasticity which may help achieve better results and quicker healing.

At Klinikal, we treat all of our patients on an individual basis, and so your surgeon will take the decision as to whether you meet the necessary criteria for nose surgery, including your reasons for having the procedure.

Whether it’s carried out by open or closed rhinoplasty, a nose job will normally last a lifetime, as the structure of your nose has been changed permanently. However, surgery doesn’t stop the natural aging process and so you may notice that as you get older your nose starts to droop as the support tissues lose their elasticity.

While the operation is being carried out, you won’t feel anything as you will be under anaesthetic. Afterwards, you’re likely to feel some discomfort or pain and you’ll be unable to breathe through your nose. You may also notice slight bleeding and drainage of mucus and old blood for the first few days. As your healing begins, any swelling, bruising or discomfort will start to lessen.

If you’ve had closed rhinoplasty, the surgery will have been performed inside the nose and so no scars will be seen. In open rhinoplasty, there are likely to be tiny scars at the base of the nose which will normally not be visible once completely healed.
