Brow Lift in Detail

Aging causes the muscles under the skin to become less elastic, resulting in skin that sags or droops. This can be especially noticeable in the forehead, eyebrow area and the upper eyelids. This can make you look older than you feel.

During brow lift surgery, your eyebrows are raised to improve the appearance of the forehead and the area around and between your eyes. By raising the brows, lifting the eyelids and smoothing out wrinkles and frown lines, it can help to provide a more youthful appearance.

For those who are unhappy with how their eyebrows sag, a brow lift could provide the following benefits:

  • Can restore the natural arch of your brows
  • Can rejuvenate the face by removing excess skin for a smoother appearance
  • Can rectify asymmetry of the eyebrows
  • Can open up the eyes for a more ‘wide awake’ look

All surgical procedures carry some degree of risk and potential side effects. Those associated with brow lift surgery can include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Asymmetry
  • Temporary changes in sensation

There are 2 different types of brow lift procedure – open and endoscopic – and your surgeon will let you know which would be right for you. They’ll consider your skin’s condition, where your hairline is positioned and the results you’d like to achieve.

During an open brow lift, an incision is made along or just beyond your hairline from one ear to the other. The skin is separated from the underlying tissue and the muscles in your brow are shortened or tightened, then the skin is stretched to lift the forehead area.

An endoscopic brow lift requires 3 to 5 incisions to be made on the scalp, then a surgical telescope is passed through them, allowing the surgeon to see the images on a screen and operate on the tissue and muscles beneath the skin. The forehead tissues are lifted and anchored, and the incisions closed.

The eyebrows ‘frame’ the face, balancing it and helping to add definition to your eyes. If you’ve noticed that your eyelids have become noticeably baggier over time, if you have a drooping forehead and eyebrows which sag downwards, or if you feel that your eyebrows are making you look tired, angry or older than you feel, a brow lift might help to open up your eye area to provide a more rejuvenated look.

After your procedure. you’ll have some swelling, bruising and discomfort during the first weeks. This will gradually disappear as you continue to heal. You should take at least 10 days off work to rest and recover, depending on the nature of your job.

Your forehead may be wrapped in a loose dressing which will help to minimise swelling, and you should try to elevate your head when resting. You’ll be advised by your surgeon when you can start to wash your hair and face.

Avoid any strenuous activity or heavy lifting in the first 4 weeks of recovery. After this, you should be able to start more strenuous exercise again.

Brow Lift FAQ's

You’re likely to experience some tenderness, swelling and bruising after the operation and you may also have a headache. This is completely normal, and you can use over-the-counter painkillers to combat any discomfort. You will need to take things easy and sleep with your head raised on pillows for the first few days after your return home. Cold compresses can also help relieve swelling.

As your scars heal, they may feel itchy or numb, but any side effects from your brow lift surgery should continue to ease as you heal and the tissues settle. You should see your final results by 6 months post-surgery.

A brow lift leaves minimal scarring, because the incisions are small. As they’re made in or along the hairline, they are typically well-hidden, and they will fade over time. By following the aftercare instructions you’re given, you can help minimise any risk of visible scarring following your brow lift.

Although a brow lift is a permanent cosmetic procedure which can provide excellent results and you can expect these to last long-term, the ageing process, as well as gravity, will continue to have an effect. To make the most of your results, you should try to follow a healthy lifestyle, such as eating well, wearing sunscreen and avoiding smoking, to look after your skin.

During the first 2 weeks post-operatively, any swelling should start to subside. This means that you should be able to make more facial expressions, such as raising your eyebrows, although they may feel numb. This should wear off as the healing process progresses.
