Pubic Lift

You might find that through ageing or weight gain, you have a noticeable ‘bulge’ of fat just below your bikini line. This is the mons pubis, the fatty tissue just above the pubic bone. If you’re feeling self-conscious or uncomfortable due to excess fat or skin in this area, a pubic lift could help.

Pubic Lift in Detail

Also known as a monsplasty or mons pubis reduction, a pubic lift is a type of cosmetic surgery that removes excess skin and fat from the mons pubis. During the procedure, your surgeon removes excess fatty tissue and then lifts and sculpts the underlying muscle to contour the pubic area. This results in a smaller and tighter pubic area.

Many people who have a tummy tuck also have a pubic lift, as the results can complement their smoother, flatter tummy.

If you suffer from excess skin and fatty tissue on your pubic area, you might find that you feel self-conscious in certain clothing, and might even experience discomfort during intercourse. Having mons pubis reduction surgery could help you – here are just some of the benefits associated with this procedure:

  • Results in a smaller and smoother pubic area
  • Can help you feel more confident in swimwear and fitted clothing
  • Can boost your self-confidence
  • May help to reduce irritation and discomfort during sex

All cosmetic procedures come with potential risks and side effects. Those associated with monsplasty can include:

  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Blood clot
  • Asymmetry
  • Changes in sensation
  • Swelling
  • Skin discolouration

Pubic lift surgery requires anaesthetic, which comes with its own risks and side effects. You can read more about these here.

In the majority of cases, general anaesthetic is used for pubic lift surgery. If you’re given general anaesthetic, you’ll be asleep throughout the whole procedure.

Once you’re asleep, your surgeon will begin by making an incision across your mons pubis before using a scalpel or similar tool to remove excess tissue and skin. They’ll then use internal stitches to tighten and redefine the muscles.

Once this is completed and the incision is closed, your surgeon will dress the area to protect the wounds. You might also have drains placed to prevent a build-up of excess fluid.

You might be a good candidate for mons pubis reduction if you have excess fat and/or skin on your pubic area that affects your day-to-day life. You might have discomfort during sex or have difficulty urinating because of the excess tissue on your mons pubis.

To be considered for this procedure, you should be in generally good health, a non-smoker and have realistic expectations of the results.

It’s important to remember that liposculpture is not a weight loss procedure, and you should be at or near your goal weight when you have this procedure.

After your pubic lift surgery, you’ll experience some swelling, bruising and discomfort. This should decrease after the first 5-7 days and can be managed with appropriate pain medication.

After the first week or so you should be able to return to your daily routine, and may be able to go back to work depending on how physical your job is. You should avoid any strenuous activity and heavy lifting for at least 4-6 weeks.

After 2 months, your incision should be fully healed and your final results visible.

Pubic Lift FAQ's

Anyone over the age of 18, regardless of gender identity, may be suitable for a pubic lift. Your suitability will depend on other factors, such as your general health and whether there is significant excess tissue to be removed.

A pubic lift is not typically included in a tummy tuck, but it is popular with those who have had a tummy tuck. This is because the effect of having a flatter, more toned stomach can sometimes make the mons pubis appear larger.

It may be possible to combine a tummy tuck with a mons pubis reduction, but this will depend on your surgeon and your suitability for these procedures.

While exercising and practicing a healthy diet to lose weight can reduce fat in certain areas of your body, there can be pockets of fat that won’t budge. This may be on your mons pubis, so there is no guarantee that losing weight will reduce its size.

If you maintain a stable weight, the results of your pubic lift should be long-lasting. Losing or gaining weight can affect the results, as it can re-stretch the area or result in a return of excess skin.

It can take up to 2 months for your final results to become visible, but this can vary and depends on your individual recovery.
